"The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" lesson plans and activities
"The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Sterling is a teleplay from the series The Twilight Zone. This story is fun to read aloud and provides meaningful discussion. Before reading this suspensful story, plan to have a few "creepy" things happen in your classroom. Arrange for someone to call your classroom a few times only to hang up. Each time you answer the phone, act surprised that no one is there. Maybe you could have some music play by itself or, if you're really crafty, the lights to flicker. This will set the mood for this story. Assign parts to your students and encourage them to read the lines with emotion. There are several Common Core standards that can be addressed with this story. It is important to take a look at how the setting affects the plot and utimately the theme. We provide a teaching packet that includes prewritng activities, and handouts to analyze literary elements.
